INDUSTRY SECTORS

  • Distribution & Logistics

Its vast port system helps Louisiana lead the logistics and transportation industries. That and the strong presence of other modes of transportation make Louisiana an ideal location for any business that requires significant transportation resources.

Possessing competitive advantages in natural resources and geography, Louisiana is a center for energy exploration and production, petrochemicals, pulp, paper, forest products, agriculture, advanced materials and manufactured goods. Logistics and transportation play a keynote in the support of industry profitability. Thus, Louisiana is rich in transportation resources.

Connected to the nation’s agricultural and industrial center by water, rail and highway, Louisiana is a vital North American distribution and logistics hub centered in the fastest-growing region of the United States and at the center of Western Hemisphere trade.

  • Energy & Chemicals

Louisiana has historically been a leader in the oil and gas industry. While still heavily dependent on oil & gas, Louisiana companies are moving forward in developing alternative energy sources.

The oil & gas industry began in Louisiana in the late 19th century when gas was discovered in northern Louisiana. Today, oil & gas is one of the state’s leading industries in terms of economic impact, tax revenue and employment.

Eighty-eight percent of U.S. offshore rigs are located on Louisiana’s Outer Continental Shelf and, counting offshore production, the state is the No. 1 producer of crude oil and the No. 2 producer of natural gas in the country.

  • Engineering & Construction

Louisiana is home to some of the largest regional and national engineering and construction companies, including The Shaw Group and Turner Industries, serving our dynamic industrial sectors.

  • Entertainment & Gaming

Louisiana’s entertainment industry features film and television production, digital media, music, and live performance. The gaming industry generates hundreds of millions in gaming tax revenue for the state. According to Louisiana Economic Development, Louisiana’s entertainment industry is thriving. In 2008, the state shattered all its previous records for film and television production, and it shows no signs of slowing down. The state has seen an increased interest in its digital media industry, and initiatives are being undertaken to further bolster Louisiana’s music scene and live performance arena.

The state offers aggressive tax credit programs for entertainment industry ventures in digital media, motion picture, sound recording and live performance. These programs offer companies an unparalleled opportunity to succeed financially and creatively. Louisiana now has the most aggressive and lucrative economic development incentives in the United States for companies engaged in digital design and development such as software, web platform, web application, mobile application and digital game design and development.

Gambling was legalized in Louisiana in 1991 and the first casino was opened in 1993. In 2009, gaming in Louisiana generated nearly $600 MM in gaming tax revenue for the state of Louisiana. The state currently has 18 casinos in operation. The industry employs more than 17,000 and 2009 visits exceeded 35 million.

  • Coastal & Environmental

Louisiana boasts many varied ecological assets, which affords us the name “Sportsman’s Paradise”. Environmental industries within Louisiana work to raise awareness and help protect the precious natural assets that make this state unique. Approximately 40 percent of the coastal wetlands of the lower forty-eight states are located in Louisiana.

  • Healthcare & Innovation

Louisiana’s health care sector constitutes a group of industries that provide comprehensive primary and preventive health care and social services to individuals and families. In addition to providing critically needed health care services, Louisiana’s health care sector significantly impacts its communities’ economies.

According to Louisiana Department of Health & Hospitals, The Louisiana Health Care Sector:

    • Provides direct employment for people in the communities, including critical entry-level jobs, training, and career building opportunities that are community-based. In 2007, these sectors represented 214,319 employed workers with a total impact of 330,946 jobs.
